Tips &amp; Tricks <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">how <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to make them grow are easily available &#8211; <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">especially on the Internet. Some <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">seem to have success with throwing the seeds into boiling water or into acid. I did not succeed with the former <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">I did not give it a try with the acid. A gardener in Namibia nipped a piece off a seed with pruning shears. I <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">tried that but found it <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">quite fiddly <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">since the seeds are difficult to hold. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Simply placing the seeds in the soil, as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">it works in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nature, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">success<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ful occasionally<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Scratching <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the seeds and soaking them in warm water for one to two days <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">leads to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">better results, but the germination rate was not s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">atisfying <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2826\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2826\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2826\" src=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/09\/9290053.jpg\" alt=\"Baobab Deko: Baobab fruit of different shapes\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/09\/9290053.jpg 800w, https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/09\/9290053-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/09\/9290053-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baobab fruit of different shapes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Therefore I experimented with baobab seeds and how to grow them and take care of them. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">For me it works best if I scratch<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, soak and finally peel the seeds. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">In a next step I put them in a container and let them germinate for two more days. The container has the effect of a miniature greenhouse. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">I mix soil with sand and put it into a pot. I place the germinated seeds on the soil and cover them with rough river sand.<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> The germination rate of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">baobab seed<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is significantly higher <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">with t<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">he peeling method.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2202\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2202\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2202\" src=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/IMG_8807.jpg\" alt=\"Baobab Seeds\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/IMG_8807.jpg 600w, https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/IMG_8807-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baobab Seeds<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>No matter which method you choose, a few basic things help:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Opening the shell: Baobab seeds have a hard shell. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">O<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">pening <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">it allows water in and initiates the germination process. In addition the opening helps the seedling to get out. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">T<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">his can be done by sawing, filing or drilling <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">for example<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Soaking the seeds: place <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">them <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in warm water for 24 to 48 hours. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">As mentioned above this will set off the germination process and helps <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">eedling <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to get <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">out of the shell<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The shell gets softer and is therefore easier to peel<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Planting: I put the germinated seeds on soil, which I mix with coarse river sand. I cover <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the seedlings <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">with sand. The seeds need water, but do not tolerate too much moisture<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1900\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1900\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1900\" src=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Baobab_Keimling_ZWE_0399.jpg\" alt=\"Baobab Sapling\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Baobab_Keimling_ZWE_0399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/baobabstories.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Baobab_Keimling_ZWE_0399-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baobab Sapling<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><span lang=\"en-US\">Grow Baobabs from seeds &#8211; The steps:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">S<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">cratch <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the baobab seeds <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">lightly<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Place <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">scratched <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">seeds in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">w<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">arm water for 1-2 days<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Gently <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">remove<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the seed coat with your fingernail<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Place the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">eeds on a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">moist <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">kitchen towel for a<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">nother<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> two days in a small bowl with a lid. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The seeds will continue germinating. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Earth: Mix cactus or regular soil with coarse river sand. The sand makes the soil more permeable and helps to prevent <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">root rot<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Pot: It should be at least 10 cm high. Put the soil mixture in the pot. Baobabs form tap roots and need space <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">t<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">o <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">do so<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Place the seedlings on the soil mixture in the pot and cover with a two centimeter thick layer of coarse river sand<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Water: <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">t<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">he baobab seedlings <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">need regular water \u2013 but do not water too often. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Pour <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">water <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">every two to three days <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and use rain water <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">if possible<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"en-US\">Light: Baobabs love <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">it <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sunny and warm. In summer they <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">can be placed outside in a warm spot \u2013 for example on the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">balcony, in the garden or on the terrace.
